Scam-broker tells: spotting a fake before you deposit

There is a difference between a poor broker and a fraudulent one. A poor broker charges too much or executes badly; a fraudulent one intends to take your deposit and never give it back. The good news is that outright scams are rarely original, they run a recognisable playbook, and once you know the tells you can usually spot one in minutes, long before any money changes hands.

The clone licence

The most common trick is a cloned identity: the scam adopts the name, licence number or branding of a genuinely regulated firm so its paperwork looks legitimate. The defence is simple and decisive, verify the licence on the regulator’s own register, and check that the contact details, website and company name on the register match the site in front of you exactly. A clone will match the number but not the details.

Manufactured proof

Fakes lean heavily on fabricated credibility: stock-photo "team" pages, testimonials that appear nowhere else on the internet, invented awards, live-profit ticker widgets, and volume or user numbers that cannot be checked. Reverse-image-search a headshot or two and the illusion often collapses. Real firms have a verifiable trail, regulatory filings, long-standing reviews, a traceable corporate history; a fake has a glossy surface and nothing underneath it.

Ownership you cannot reach

Ask a basic question: who owns and runs this company, and where? A legitimate broker will name a regulated entity, a registered address and a real jurisdiction. A scam hides behind a web form, a chat widget and a vague "international" footprint, with support that is warm and responsive right up until you have deposited. Opacity about who is actually holding your money is disqualifying on its own.

The pressure and the exit test

Two behaviours seal it. First, manufactured urgency, a "manager" pushing you to deposit today, an expiring bonus, a hot opportunity you must fund now. Second, and most telling, friction at the exit: the account that accepts deposits instantly but invents endless verification steps when you try to withdraw. Any single tell warrants caution; several together mean stop. For the fuller pattern, study the practices worth walking away from before you fund anything. This is educational, consumer-protective information, not financial advice, verify a broker independently before trusting it with money.
